
Authors Bio:
Gordon Gritz is a nationally published poet whose work has appeared in Inner Voices, Walking Rain Review, Corrections: A Literary Journal, Pen America, Rattle: Poetry for the 21st Century, Freedom of Vision: Voices Behind Prison Walls, and Green Hills Literary Lantern. He was awarded first place for poetry in the 2003 Pen Prison Writing Awards for his poem, "The Nature of Things" and he won the Peoples press 2003 Writer's Competition for Poetry with "My Father's War". His peom, "Deeper" was published in Walking Rain Review XIII in the Summer 2007 edition. Gordon currently resides in the ASPC-Eyman-Cook Unit where he works as a GED Tutor preparing students for the Essay portion of the GED Education.
DEEPER
Life shatters and I am alone one of the dispossessed behind the wire of no-mans-land.
The biting wind howls through my skin. I look over my shoulder and even my shadow has gone somewhere without me.
Life is about losing things the German priest reminds me at mass. It shapes my theology in ways I could never imagine.
The world doesn't change only my relationship to it. In each loss I find knowledge I was hiding from
At last I understand it's not the avoidance of suffering that makes a life but how we survive the gauntlet and what we do with what is left.
